The Martenson Report

Personal Preparation - Where To Begin

For enrolled members only. Enroll now to gain full access to all Martenson Reports.

Wednesday, October 28, 2009

Executive Summary

  • Why prepare?
  • Where to begin?
  • Action is liberating
  • Do what is necessary, knowing it is insufficient
  • Put on your own "oxygen mask" first
  • Seek personal and community resilience
  • Any measure of self-sufficiency is valuable
  • Start with small steps
  • Food, water, shelter, and warmth

In a recent report entitled It's Time to Prepare, I walked through the financial preparations that one might take to add greater resilience to one's holdings and where they are located.

But there is more to preparation that just financial savvy. I have been asked repeatedly to provide some guidance on personal preparation. In this report, I will begin the process of sharing my thoughts and experiences about this subject.

There are some basic things that would like to see every person considering for themselves and their family in order to minimize the impact of future disruptions. While I cannot be sure of when, or even if, these disruptions will happen, I am certain of two things:  you can prepare for these changes relatively cheaply, and you will feel better for having done so.

Re: Personal Preparation - Where To Begin

Thanks for all the insights Chris-

I agree totally that one should not just into the cabin in the woods unless they have experience and a willingness to work hard and long hours. For those with no experience - it is a "Into The Wild" and risky...

Chris,

Thanks for the tremendous perspective you bring on direction.

I'd like to add the importance of frame of mind.  Recently I have come across the book "The Art of Happiness: A Handbook for Living" written by the Dalai Lama and Howard C...

Great report Dr. M !

When I first watched the crash course and became a member here a year ago, this report was exactly what I was looking for. I think many new members, and established members, will truly value this information.

Thanks...

Re: Personal Preparation - Where To Begin

I have done most of what you suggest but still need to provide emergency energy for the freezer and to dig a shallow well. I really did not like carrying water during last winter's ice storm!

I cashed in my very small IRA in 2008 and had a local mason build a masonry stove with a bake oven...

Re: Personal Preparation - Where To Begin

I find it difficult to connect locally with people familiar with Chris's website and ideas.  Would it be possible to set up some kind of contact site - besides craigs list - so we could get together with like minded individuals.  I know there's a danger in internet contacts - any suggestions?  I live in southern Oregon...
