Swine flu log

Well, I just got back from getting my H1N1 flu shot. I'll let you guys know if I turn into a reptile or if my legs explode.

In the meantime I'll just wait for the pandemic to run its course so I can feel smug when they start stacking the bodies with those who didn't get the shot. :D

Re: Swine flu log

4000 deaths as of yesterday out of 22 million infected as of latest CDC release.  Risk of death is 1.8 per 10,000 infections.  So yes you are safer with the shot.  The risk of death due to allergic reaction to the shot is less than 1 in 10,000.  Congratulations!  You are TWICE as safe!!

Actually, as I've said before, I really don't know what the best plan of action is, at this point.  But with the vaccine industry's record, it's hard for me to imagine putting my life in their hands . . . Good luck, Ed . . . May the shot be with you . . .

Hold on a minute . . . Isn't the shot only for pregnant women and children, at this point?  Is there something you aren't telling us, Ed?

Re: Swine flu log

Swine flu hit 3 out of 4 in  our house this week:

4 year old daughter - lasted 2 days.  Had a high fever, aches and (mostly) upper respiratory symptoms.  Only a very slight cough.

7 year old daughter - also lasted 2 days - fever not as high, symptoms generally milder.

me - I've had it 4 days now.  Early on I had a high fever, now it's not so high.  I have a slightly upset stomach, aches and pains.  I developed an infrequent cough on day 2 and a runny nose on day 3.

I gave everyone (including my wife who is still healthy) homemade elderberry syrup as soon as symptoms began.  That seemed to make a big difference with the kids.  Most other children I know of had symptoms for 5-10 days, but my illness is dragging on.  Well, maybe I'd have pneumonia by now without it.

Thanks for the anecdotal account, Steve . . . I've posted about the long history of elderberry syrup for prevention and treatment of influenza.  I'm not sure where it was posted, but I also duplicated the info over on my blog.

Cloudfire, I believe you pointed us to this link:

http://purecajunsunshine.blogspot.com/20...

I followed here recipe exactly other than using less sugar since it was for immediate use and I did use a metal pot in spite of her insistence on not using one.  Other online elderberry recipes actually recommend a metal pot.

BTW, I've posted results of my acorn experience recently at:

Doc, do you know what the stats for people between ages 5 and 50 re death rates?  I think that would be significant, since the normal flu kills almost no one in this age bracket.

Re: Swine flu log

I had thought about getting the vaccine since I have an 18 month old and I would prefer to keep her out of hospitals. However we got the flu in our house a few days ago.

Me (24 year old female) - fever, slight cough no other symptoms. Only lasted for 24 hours.

Hubby- (24 year old male) - fever, slight cough turned into head cold after 12 hours.

Daughter- no sign of illness

I will say I could tell I was getting sick so I started taking "Emergen - C", and an expectorant. For the safety of our daughter I decided to get tested just in case so we could monitor symptoms. Swine Flu positive.

Overall this affected my family less than a usual cold.

True. Those are just the overall stats and include all related deaths when infected with swine flu including bacterial superinfections. ie you died while infected -- even if the death was from something else like a bacterial infection or even a heart attack.

I believe the great majority of those deaths would be (as you correctly stated) in adults and children with other underlying chronic illnesses or at the extremes of age.  However, this is just my educated guess because I really have not seen the actual data they are going on.

My family (including our 10 mo old) also had mild symptoms.  We didn't get tested, but most of our symptoms matched the description so odds are it was H1N1 in our case.  With all our family, it lasted no more than 4-5 days.
