So I got sent this e-mail today......
Yep. Ft Hood in Texas is the largest Army base in the nation. Most of the soldiers there are NOT from that region. Where do you think their loyalty lies ? There would be a LOT of dead TEXOARKLAns before it was over (and secession failed).
And... with the impinging drug lord armies just across the border in Mexico (hell they're already in Texas, let face it), with the loss of Federal police action holding them back, we'd be in a world of hurt, Chuck Norris notwithstanding ;)

I am getting the impression people think I agreed with this e-mail! I do not! I posted it because I think it is a very bad idea and shows pretty clearly that a.) people do NOT understand their own state level economies any more than they do the national or global one b.) people ARE thinking more and more about secession and c.) secession is a BAD idea as it would weaken the entire country and leave us open to stronger foreign countries' economic and military invasion....
I would agree with the general idea Nate. I don't think that people here are making fun of the localization part of secession. It's the uninformed attitude of secessionists, and in particular the tone of the email that was posted to start this thread. People singing the praises of secession don't seem to fully grasp the reality of what the evil federal government has done for them, and what they would have to do without. Heck. I don't think about it most of the time. Now I am spending a lot more time looking at it.
I also got this email a few months back.
And immediately recgnized it for the humor it was intended to convey.
Just how many of you took it seriously?
I'm just sayin'........

No, Dogs I did not miss the humor, I saw that it was meant as funny. But, sociologists have often said that to predict the future of a nation one only needs to listen to its comedians for it is in humor that society's tell their truth.....
The only reason this would be funny to a person is if they thought that secretly this would be a good idea and that there is truth in it. Besides, the person who sent it to me sent it as a way of thumbing his nose at me, as I live on the coast and he thinks the cities of the coast are Soddom and Gomorrah and should be eliminated.

" c.) secession is a BAD idea as it would weaken the entire country and leave us open to stronger foreign countries' economic and military invasion...."
Yep this would be a bad thing it would interfere with the invasion well under way by our own federal government.. I know it could always be worse but my question is how much worse?
There would be no reason for a military invasion a few more years and this country will be going for pennies on the dollar. I assume the country you fear is China. They would not be stupid enough to destroy their collateral.
Or another scenario is the fifty states then reorganize with three enumerated powers (coin money, regulate interstate commerce and raise an army for a common defense) under a very weak federal system with the rest of the rights reverting to the separate states and the citizens.. Oh my it was tried over 200 years ago and is an abject failure........my bad.

I think picking a fight with the people of Alaska would be a bad idea. They would rally around Sarah Palin.
Of course you Jeff could be referring to Arkansas which has the postal abb. of AR.

Actually V, when I think of the options available to the US at this point we're basically looking at bad choices or worse choices. None of them are appealing and none of them look peaceful. But, I think we would be better served by revolution rather than secession. Revolution could give us a possibility - however slim it might be - of getting back some semblance of what the founders envisioned. The revolution could just be massive social upheaval rather than full out war. Secession will create a group of smaller countries with no ability to defend against outsiders or each other......
I personally think China is the least of our worries. China is practically the only thing keeping our dollar alive. But, having said that, there are other countries far more likely to start something against a small piece of the US that they would not do against the entire entity as it exists now. While unlikely, I would not count out Iran, North Korea or even Pakistan from trying to get a foot hold. It does no good with these nations to consider it logically, look at it form a nationalistic perspective from their side and you can see how it would appeal. Even Mexico could consider trying to "get back" some land if they thought the group holding it was weak enough.

land2341,
I was with you all the way up to #2.
